One billion iOS units have been sold so far

If you ever wondered just how big Apple as a company really is, CEO Tim Cook announced last night during the company’s annual results presentation that it has shipped a billion iOS units.

Cook explained that the one billionth unit was in fact a space grey, 64GB iPhone 6 Plus, and that Apple has placed the unit in a save storage area, presumably to display it at its headquarters. He added that the number was actually hit in November last year, so the total to date is well past that.

To give you a better idea of how close a race it is between Apple and Android, Google’s open-source operating system was activated on a billion devices in September 2013. While that might sound like Android is pulling ahead, one has to keep in mind that there are a number of Android devices, and this amount presumably includes tablets. Apple only releases a handful of products per cycle, so pound for pound they are pretty close.

In the earnings presentation Cook also revealed that Apple had earnings of $18 billion on $74.6 billion in revenue – while 74.5 million iPhones were sold in the quarter.

“We’d like to thank our customers for an incredible quarter, which saw demand for Apple products soar to an all-time high,” Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO said in a statement. “Our revenue grew 30 percent over last year to $74.6 billion, and the execution by our teams to achieve these results was simply phenomenal,” Cook said in a media statement.
