Mobile to take centre stage at Sony’s annual photography competition

There is no denying that mobile photography has taken off in a huge way over the last couple of years. Apple has its annual iPhoneography photographic competition, and smartphone manufacturers keep on upping the ante when it comes to technology.

Sony has also now jumped on the mobile photography band wagon. For this year, the Sony World Photography Awards will feature a mobile phone category to showcase some of the best works taken with a smartphone.

“With today’s incredible technology at our fingertips we have ability to capture the everyday events that actually form part of the unique fabric of our lives.  Most of us document our own history every day with our mobile phones and think nothing of it.  This category allows us to look a little closer at those otherwise ordinary moments,” said Astrid Merget Motsenigos, creative director, World Photography Organisation, in a media statement.

If you fancy yourself a decent mobile photographer, you can enter your works for free over here, and after the 27 February closing date, the photos will be judged by:

  • Anna Dickson, director of photography, Huffington Post, US
  • Chris Hudson, group art editor, National Geographic Traveller, UK
  • Anthony Lepinay, photographer and creative director, France
  • Alvin Soon, associate editor, HWM and HardwareZone.com, Singapore
  • Evgeny Tchebotarev, CPO and co-founder, 500px, Canada

If you manage to make it on to the shortlist at the end, your photos will be showcased on the World Photography Organisation website, where a winner will be picked by public vote from 10-17 March. A winner will be announced on 23 April, and will be flown to London to collect the prize at the Sony World Photography Awards gala ceremony.

“It is a real pleasure to see how photography is evolving with new technologies and new uses.  Immediacy changes the way we think of photos. We have to be ‘always on’ to catch the perfect moment.  And I hope to find some perfect moments with this award,” commented Judge Anthony Lepinay.
