Google’s real-time voice translation service is en route

After Microsoft launched a new feature in Skype that lets users translate different languages in real-time, Google is upping its own linguist game by focusing on taking the schlep out of using Translate on mobile by adding a similar feature.

According to The New York Times, an updated (and incoming) version of Google Translate for Android will automatically detect and translate audio in any of the 90 languages available on the service into a user’s native language and display it as text on your smartphone. Easy.

The technology isn’t something we haven’t seen before – services like Japan’s DoCoMo mobile operator already offering on-the-go translations – but it’s still a welcome addition to Google Translate that will probably go a long way in helping users get results back more easily and quickly.

Google says the feature will be particular helpful for its millions of active monthly users to communicate more easily when conversing with foreign language speakers.
