Hey devs: come and learn how to create Firefox apps in Joburg

Android may be cleaning up when it comes to smartphone ownership, but over the course of the next few months if there’s one OS we’d recommend keeping an eye on, it’s Firefox. Since its original release back in 2012, Firefox OS has been quietly ticking over with new releases that make it faster and available on more hardware, including non-phone controller boards like Raspberry Pi.

And for those who want to know more about Firefox OS,  whether you’re an app developer, open source fanatic, coder of any kind or just interested in what Mozilla does, there’s an event just for you coming up at the end of the month.

It’ll be held at JoziHub on 44 Stanley Avenue in Milpark, Johannesburg, on Saturday 31st January from 10am to 4pm. Food and drinks will be provided, and there’s “swag” to be had too.

All you need to do is sign up for the free event here.

The aim is twofold: firstly to create more awareness of the joys of open source software and secondly to start building a community of Firefox developers in Joburg and, indeed, South Africa as a whole. Also, you can meet Mozilla’s African reps and find out what support there is for local devs here.

For those who don’t know, Firefox OS is a full phone operating system created by the Mozilla Foundation (same as the browser) which uses an Android base with lots of free and open source software on top. Outside of projects like Blackphone, it’s the only OS which gives you ultimate power over what’s installed and what apps can access what features, so it’s definitely one for privacy fans to watch. It’s also relevant here: MTN is due to launch a Firefox OS-powered phone sometime soon.
