[AUDIO] DA says no to nuclear, and Eskom bosses should pay back bonuses

Hundreds of Democratic Alliance members protested at Eskom’s Megawatt Park this morning, with a list of four demands that they made to the state energy provider.

Led by DA parliamentary leader Mmusi Maimane, the party demanded:

  • That the utility firm’s management repay the bonuses that they have been paid
  • Allow independent power providers to supply electricity
  • Dismantle the nuclear deal with Russia
  • That Eskom should be broken up.

The march came as Eskom announced that Stage 1 loadshedding would come into effect today.

DA parliamentary leader Mmusi Maimane addressed the gathering crowd, who has been singing and dancing since around 8am.

“The ANC doesn’t have a plan for the future. All that they can rely on, are these massive state entities so that they can extract resources for their personal benefit. I don’t believe there is a personal will. I think Minister Lynn Brown is in denial about the nature of the crisis that we are facing,” Maimane told reporters.

Maimane explained at length to the supporters the four specific goals that the DA want to reach, and what the current government is doing wrong.

“We can’t afford for Eskom to remain a monopoly. We want to tell them we must allow them to be competitive, because if they are not competitive they are going to hold us to hi-jack. This is a crisis democrats,” he said.
