Local NPO wins Google RISE grant to teach computer science in Africa

Africa Teen Geeks, a non-profit organisation based in South Africa, has been selected as one of 37 recipients of the Google RISE Awards grant which provides funding for NPOs and programs around the world dedicated to promoting computer science education.

Every year the Google RISE Awards identify and partner with organisations working to increase access to the internet and computer science education for girls, underrepresented minorities, and young students facing socio-economic barriers in their schools and communities.

Africa Teen Geeks has been travelling to communities around the country since 2010 to teach learners and unemployed youngsters how to use software, code and use these skills to become entrepreneurs through various outreach programs and coding camps.

The organisation also trains school teachers to incorporate coding into the current school computer curriculum.

Joining Africa Teen Geeks as the four African recipients of the RISE Awards are: @iLabAfrica from Kenya, Co-Creation Hub and Rainbow Gate Foundation, both from Nigeria.
