This year’s Call of Duty could be brought to you by Black Ops devs

If I told you there would be another Call of Duty in 2015, would you be surprised? Probably not, especially as it’s well-known by now that Activision moved to a three-year, three-studio development process that bore its first fruit with Sledgehammer Games’ excellent Advanced Warfare last year.

Everyone and his dog is reporting this morning (also VG247) that in a recent conference call with investors, Activision-Blizzard hinted at, but didn’t confirm that there will be another Call of Duty game this year, and that one of Activision’s most experienced studios, Treyarch, may be responsible for its development.

It’s essentially conjecture, though. VG247 writes that Blizzard-Activision CFO said “An “exciting” new game from one of the firm’s “top development teams” will be released in Q4 this year, and “several unannounced initiatives” are in the works and more information on both will be announced “in the months ahead”, which they presumed to mean Treyarch is doing 2015’s Call of Duty.

That wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world, though. Treyarch’s last Call of Duty game was the best-selling Black Ops II, and it was good enough to sell over 24 million copies in the first year of availability, a record that was broken by only the biggest game ever, GTA V, when it sold even more in less time in late 2013.

The only thing that worries me, however, is that this could also mean Call of Duty is going back to World War II or some other not-so-recent-past conflict. After the awesomeness that was Advanced Warfare’s… er…. advanced warfare and imaginative gadgets, I can’t bear the idea of returning to a low-tech time. Been there, done that thanks.

Oh well. Whatever the case, you can be assured of a 2015 Call of Duty just like you can count on Eskom delivering third-world class power outages. We’ll know more as this year’s game conferences get going in the next few months, so stay tuned for more news soon.
