Forget videogame streaming, watch people code instead

Watching people write lines and lines of code is starting to become popular on video streaming services like Twitch.tv. So says The Next Web, which writes that people are tuning in to watch programmers create everything from Minecraft servers to writing compilers from scratch.

It makes sense, in a way – it gives aspiring programmers a window into the creation process that textbooks and classrooms just can’t, as well as providing the opportunity to talk to the streamer and ask questions.

I’m not entirely sure what the streamers get from it, or how they handle the interruptions from their viewers; I imagine coding is a particularly intense process that requires pinpoint concentration that taking time out to answer questions would break.

Still, it’s gaining in popularity: a subreddit called WatchPeopleCode was started to track current and upcoming streams of coding sessions, which apparently picked up 2 000 subscribers in 25 days.

If you’re interested in learning how to code, or improving your skills in a specific discipline, head over to the subreddit now.
