Apple’s new solar farm is almost twice the size of Africa’s largest

Hey Africa, you have a lot of sun, right? And that can be turned into electricity thanks to the photovoltaic (PV) solar panels? Here’s something that’s food for thought when it comes to solving your electricity crises.

Apple – which admittedly posted last quarter profits equivalent to the entire GDP of the poorest 11 countries in Africa combined – has just announced that it’s funding the construction of a new solar farm for powering its datacentres in California. It’ll take just 18 months to build and will cost the firm $33m (R386m) a year for 25 years. The farm is rated as a 150MW project. The largest solar farm in Africa, Kimberley’s Jasper project, has a boilerplate rating of 96MW.

This is the fourth solar farm Apple has invested in, and will take up 2 900 acres of space in Monterey County.

The California plant is being constructed for an undisclosed amount by First Solar, which says Apple is contracted to buy 130MW of energy. The remaining power will be sold to the grid.

A similarly sized plant should be coming online in Ghana later this year.
