Read on demand: Unlimited access to books & comics for R110 a month

Do you love reading comics and books and listening to audiobooks but hate how expensive it can all get? You’re not alone, and Scribd wants to help.

According to a recent article on io9, the people behind Scribd have spotted a gap in the market for an unlimited subscription service for word and picture lovers that costs just $8.99 a month. It’s the same concept as Netflix, which offers people in the US unlimited TV shows and movies for a fixed monthly price, just for literature.

For your monthly R105.78, you’ll get access to over 10 000 comics from a wide range of publishers, all kinds of books from bestsellers to Pulitzer Prize winners to cookbooks, and more audiobooks than you could feasibly listen to in your lifetime. That’s a pretty good deal considering it’s hard to get anything but a second-hand book or one and a half Archie comics a month for that price.

But it’s the comics on offer that are the most intriguing. Scribd’s chief marketing officer, Julie Haddon told io9 the company has over 10 000 comics and graphic novels from big-name publishers like Marvel, IDW, Top Cow, Archie and more, and that while it doesn’t have complete publication libraries, it does add month-old comics to the service. That’s a lot better than Marvel’s competing Marvel Unlimited subscription service, which a commenter on the story said waits six months before adding published comics to its digital line-up.

Scribd can be accessed through a regular web browser on a PC or Mac, as well as through its iOS and Android app. Reading on a screen can take some getting used to, but the apps work particularly well with a touchscreen and don’t feel as clunky as some PDF readers do.

Should this sound like a good deal – and it is – but you’re a little unsure about committing your R105.78, Scribd also offers a 25-day trial so you can test everything out.

I honestly can’t think of a downside here. What a win for literature lovers everywhere!
