Wildlife snappers rejoice: first teleconverter for Fuji X-Series announced

Fujifilm has just put out a new roadmap for the future of its X-Series lenses, which more or less fills in all the holes in the mirrorless compact camera system that we’ve struggled with in the past.

The only real issue we have with the X-Series at the moment is lens length. Right now, the longest zoom you can buy stretches to 230mm – and while that’s a good, affordable lens, it’s not quite enough to make wildlife photographers picking ears out of the bush happy.

There’s some bad news on this front. A previously announced 100-400mm superzoom lens won’t actually be available until early next year (originally it was planned for this autumn), and that’s just disappointing all round. As a consolation, though, Fuji is going to release a 1.4x teleconverter some time this summer.

“Fujifilm has listened to photographers and are producing lenses dedicated to photographers needs. With the increase of Zoom lenses, sport and wildlife will become key focus areas,” says Eslie Basson, National Sales Manager at Fujifilm South Africa.

It’s not quite time to cheer, though. According to Fuji’s official announcement, the teleconverter will be compatible with the following lenses XF120mmF2.8 R Macro, XF50-140mmF2.8 R LM OIS WR, XF100-400mm. So those dreaming of a 480mm equivalent lens by hooking their existing XC50-230mm into it may be disappointed (or not, we’re waiting for confirmation as to whether or not older lenses could work with the teleconverter, even if they’re not officially supported).

Other new items on the roadmap include a new prime, the XF35mmF2 R, which is essentially a smaller and lighter version of the 35mm f/1.4R is aimed at photographers who will appreciate the smaller size and lighter weight. This lens is nice addition for those who like to keep their “street photography” cameras really small and compact.

The last of the lenses to arrive will be the XF120mmF2.8 R Macro, this is the second macro lens to be added to the Fujifilm line-up. But you will have to wait till the second half of 2106 for this one.
