Vote for Cape Town to be included in new Monopoly board

Monopoly, the iconic property boardgame, turns 80 this year and to celebrate, the game’s manufacturer (Hasbro) is giving fans the chance to choose which cities around the world should be added to new games to be released this year. We’re proud to announce that Cape Town is among the list of cities you can pick.

You can vote to have the Mother City added as one of two international property spaces on the Monopoly Here & Now: World Edition game to be released in September. Voting is already open on BuzzFeed and closes on the 4th of March.

Cape Town currently stands in 10th place out of 15 cities, so it needs as many votes as it can get to move it into the top two. Leading the pack right now are Lima and Warsaw, in 1st and 2nd place respectively.

“From London to Los Angeles, Chicago to Cape Town, fans can rally behind their beloved hometowns, favourite vacation spots, or cities on their travel bucket lists by sharing the vote on Facebook and Twitter using the hashtag #VoteMONOPOLY as well as engage with fun BuzzFeed content featuring the cities in the vote,” says Hasbro.

From the 3rd of March through to the 9th, fans will be able to add more cities not included in the initial list of 15 and the ones with the most submissions during this week will be featured as the two brown property spaces in the World and U.S. editions of Monopoly Here & Now.

The final list of cities that will be featured in the Monopoly: Here & Now games will be announced on Thursday, 19th March, which is World Monopoly Day and the game’s official birthday.

The Monopoly Here & Now games will also feature iconic landmark tokens and new additions where players travel around the board to visit as many locations as possible, collecting passport stamps along the way. Players will collect cash from visitor fees when opponents land on their locations and the first to to fill their passport, wins.
