Soweto Innovation Week to shine spotlight on kasi startups

Startups from Soweto and the greater Joburg will have the chance to showcase their business at the Soweto Innovation Week coming up in April, the event organisers have announced.

The first ever Soweto Innovation Week takes place from 8th to 10th April at the Soweto Theatre in Jabulani where hundreds of tech and digital professionals, leaders, startups and corporates will gather.

The startups showcase will give early stage tech entrepreneurs a chance to exhibit their business at the event where they’ll get exposure and expert feedback. Startups will also give a pitch on the main stage to an audience that will include potential investors and mentors.

Only five startups will have the chance to be a part of it and Soweto Innovation Week is running a competition to choose these finalists.

To enter, fill out this form on the Soweto Innovation Week website, you’ll have to upload a video about your startup of no longer than two and a half minutes.

The competition closes on 18th March and the winners will be announced on the 25th.

Soweto Innovation Week has also revealed a few of the speakers expected to address the audience at the event, they are:

  • Dr Kerry Faul, head of the National Intellectual Property Management Office (NIPMO) in South Africa
  • Jason Njoku, Cco-founder of iROKO and Spark NG
  • Craig Wing, entrepreneur and former head of Small Business Marketing at Google South Africa
  • Kanyi Maqubela, investor and partner at the USA Collaborative Fund

“More speakers will be introduced in the next couple of weeks with all speakers being revealed when the event website goes live and opens for ticket sales and registrations on 2nd March 2015. The full schedule will also be revealed on 2nd March,” says Soweto Innovation Week.
