YouTube’s Android app for children out next week

Come 23rd February, Google will officially release their YouTube Kids Android app.

Rumours of a version of YouTube designed especially for kids to provide age-appropriate content and online protection made the rounds in March last year and were confirmed in December.

On YouTube Kids, younger viewers will be able to watch videos as well as TV shows and parents and teachers will be able to set timers to limit how much time kids spend on the site.

The app’s interface was reportedly designed to appeal to its target audience and will be easy enough for them to navigate on their own.

According to USA Today, which got an exclusive preview of the app, YouTube Kids’ home screen has eight large tiles showcasing images from popular childrens’ shows. “Above them hover five simple icons, a TV set for programs such as Thomas the Tank Engine and Yo Gabba Gabba; a radio for video renditions of popular songs; a light bulb for educational programming such as Khan Academy; and binoculars to explore a range of top videos,” the site says.

Malik Ducard, YouTube’s head of Family/EDU, will unveil the app on the 23rd of February at the Kidscreen Summit, an annual US conference on the business of kids entertainment that hosts more than 1 600 global attendees.

It’s not yet clear whether the app will be available worldwide upon release.
