In addition to the seven Gauteng schools that went paperless in last month, six schools will also follow suit, according to the province’s premier David Makhura.
Makhura made the announcement during his Gauteng State of the Province Address (SOPAGP) this morning at the Gauteng Legislature in the Johannesburg CBD.
“Our goal is to produce learners who will compete globally,” Makhura said. “This requires that we continue to improve the quality of public education across the schooling system, with a particular focus on improving education outcomes in maths and science.”
R2.6 billion has been allocated by the provincial government for the delivery of education infrastructure including ICT resources.
“We are converting existing schools into smart schools. In addition to the seven schools launched in December, six more schools have been identified,” said Makhura.
Makhura also reiterated that the province has provided 88 000 tablets for use in schools.
“Through this programme we are moving closer to the kind of society envisaged in the National Development Plan. A society where opportunity is not determined by birth but by ability, education and hard work,” he said.
The premier did not mention the names of the six schools to go paperless, neither did he give a time frame to indicate when the migration may be completed, but we will be following up on this story for more information.
