PlayStation, Xbox or Wii? Nielsen analyses your console choice

Ever wondered what makes people choose PlayStation 4s, Xbox Ones and Wii Us over each other? Nielsen thinks it knows thanks to a recent “360º Gamer Report” that surveyed a number of gamers over 13 about their console loyalties.

As it turns out, the main reason gamers buy PS4s because so many games run at 1080p, versus the Xbox One which has often had to sacrifice resolution in order to run games at a minimum of 30fps due to slightly less powerful hardware. For example, Dragon Age: Inquisition runs at 1080p on the PS4 and at 900p on the Xbox One, and it’s not the only one.

Xbox fans, meanwhile, love their Xbox Ones because of the Microsoft brand and – a bit surprisingly – the Kinect. The second reason cited by Xbox One owners is “Innovative features” which can only be Microsoft’s motion-detecting peripheral, even though it isn’t explicitly stated.

Nintendo’s Wii U fared quite well with families, as the number one reason cited for buying was its fun factor and number two was that it was better for kids. No surprise there, then.

As I like my Xboxes because of Microsoft’s design philosophy, their use of Gamerscore and achievements that encourage me to play in ways I may not otherwise, I totally understand how “brand” came to be the number one reason for gamers buying Xbox Ones. The Kinect doesn’t do anything for me, personally, but clearly I’m in the minority.

If you’ve chosen one or more of these systems, I’d love to hear from you what your reasons for buying were. As always, you’re welcome to hit me up here.
