First game for Valve’s VR headset simulates… a job

Yes, you read that correctly. Job Simulator is to be the first game for Valve’s newly-unveiled Vive VR headset, from Indie Studio Owlchemy of Shoot Many Robots fame.

The game will simulate what it’s like to have a job in food preparation and housekeeping, but for a very good reason: It’s the year 2050 and robots have taken over all of the menial, blue-collar jobs previously done by humans, and the only remaining connection to the honour and dignity of such work is through virtual reality.

Owlchemy only showed off a brief video outlining the proof of concept, but they also promised to share more about it in the upcoming Game Developer’s Conference that starts on Wednesday. It will be playable at Valve’s booth at GDC, according to the blog post that accompanied the unveiling at MWC.

The studio is very excited about the future of VR, saying on its blog that “Ever since the Oculus Rift Kickstarter, we’ve been fervent believers in the potential of VR and ecstatic about the forthcoming widespread consumer adoption of such a transformative new medium. When the first Oculus development kit was released, we saw the potential and knew it would play a very important part in the future of Owlchemy Labs.”

Owlchemy developed a game for the Oculus Rift VR headset called Aaaaaculus!, a game that simulates base-jumping and dodging obstacles in virtual reality, so there’s already a lot of VR experience there.

I don’t care if some VR games are nothing more than jokey tongue-in-cheek pokes like this one, I’m just happy studios are feeling the same excitement I do for the medium, and are actively getting onboard with the concept.

Who’s with me?
