FTTH from MWEB comes to 48 suburbs in SA

Fibre-to-the-home is punted as being the next big thing in suburban broadband connectivity. Even South Africa is getting in on the action, albeit on a limited scale for now.

While companies like Vumatel have been making great strides in connecting a number of Johannesburg regions using fibre, MWEB has also thrown its hat into the FTTH ring.

The MultiChoice-owned Internet service provider today announced the pricing structure for its planned FTTH rollout, which is coming to 48 suburbs across South Africa.

But this isn’t in competition with Vumatel, as MWEB will be working with the fibre provider to connect the areas it has earmarked.

“We know that many of our customers are keen to migrate to fibre, therefore MWEB has developed an array of great fibre-to-the-home products for our customers to choose from,” said Carolyn Holgate, General Manager at MWEB, in a press statement.

The entry-level package includes a 20Mbps line with a monthly cap of 100GB, and will set you back R999. Other packages include 40mbps and 100mbps speeds with data allocations of 100GB, 200GB and 500GB.

Interestingly, the very fastest 100mpbs packages aren’t much more expensive than the 40mbps ones. You can opt for a 40mbps line with 100GB of data and pay R1 099 a month, or bump your speed up to 100mbps for the same amount of data and pay just R100 more for two and a half times the speed.

The absolute maximum you could pay for MWEB’s fastest and most generous package is R2 849 for a 100Mbps line with a 500GB cap. That’s only R200 more than the 20mbps/500GB package for an extra 80mbps of speed.

MWEB also offers the same amount of data per package as “Night time data”, meaning you can download to your heart’s content between midnight and 6am every day and have that data taken off a second 100GB/200GB/500GB total, effectively doubling your data allocation if you manage it carefully.
