SciBraai brings science and fire-side storytelling to the National Science Festival

With its 2015 theme of “Science alight!”, the National Science Festival (SciFest Africa) has found the perfect way to bring South Africans and science together: with a braai and the promise of free wors rolls. For the first 50 attendees, anyway.

The idea is to share cool science success stories around a fire, delivered by charismatic science types and shared with everyday South Africans in a real-world setting, since a lot of people still don’t have access to the internet where such events would normally take place.

The official SciBraai website says “This pilot SciBraai event will be a mix between a Science Café, a “speed-date a scientist”, Famelab and telling a story around a campfire. There will be a real braai with free boerewors rolls, and a few scientists/speakers chatting to rotating groups of kids/adults, in their home language if possible.”

Since the event takes place on the 20th of March, the day before Human Rights Day, the theme of the talks will be around how science helps to ensure people have access to the things they have human rights to, like healthcare, a healthy environment, education and other things.

SciBraai promises to be an informative and interesting event, and if you’re keen (and in the Grahamstown area for the National Science Festival), consider heading on over to the Albany Museum in Grahamstown between 10am and 3pm on the day.

SciFest Africa takes place from the 18th to 24th of March; for more information, check out the festival’s official webpage.
