Uber commits to creating 1 million jobs for women by 2020

By 2020, taxi-hailing app service Uber will have one million female drivers around the world signed up, the company has announced.

This is in line with a new partnership forged with with UN Women at the 20th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration to advance gender equality currently under way at the Commission on the Status of Women in New York.

Uber and UN Women says this will help boost women’s access to equal employment and financial opportunities in countries where the service is available.

According to recent stats, only 14% of Uber’s drivers in the US, the company’s biggest market, are women.

“This important mission can only be accomplished when all women have direct access to safe and equitable earning opportunities. We look forward to a partnership where UN Women and Uber will drive more access to these types of opportunities around the world,” said UN Women executive director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka.

Uber has recently faced a lot of criticism in the global media for the company’s perceived attitude towards women, particularly after an advert in France suggested its female drivers were “hot chicks” and the controversial CEO threatened to dig up dirt by examining a woman journalist’s ride history with the taxi app. As PR offensives to turn around an image go, you can’t get more ambitious than involving the UN.

Below are the stories of three female Uber drivers from Nairobi, London and Colombia, describing their experiences as drivers in the male-dominated industry.
