Google Nexus 5 is gone

Google has pulled its Nexus 5 smartphone from the Google Play Store, according to The Verge.

The search giant’s smartphone (both the 16GB and the 32GB models) is registered as ‘no longer available’ in the Play Store – meaning you can’t buy it direct anymore from Google – and stocks on Orange’s local online store seem to be depleted too. You can still pick up a cover for the phone, though why would you need to?

A Google spokesperson told The Verge that “while some inventory of Nexus 5 still exists (with our retail and carrier partners), our focus is on the Nexus 6 at this time.”

The statement echoes Google’s announcement back in December of last year that the Nexus 5 was no longer in production and most industry pundits have been expecting it to be phased out once the Nexus 6 hits the market.

Traditionally, though, Google usually has two smartphone models in the market at any given time. Could the disappearance of the Nexus 5 mean that a new model is in production? Watch this space…

In the meantime, it’s worth noting that Google seems to have reorganised its online stores, separating hardware and software. Handsets, tablets, Chrome Books and the like have now been moved to a space simply tagged as the ‘Google Store’, while apps and other digital products are still for sale in the Google Play Store.
