Cape Town made it onto the new Monopoly board

Congratulations are in order for Cape Town, as the Mother City has received its greatest honour to date. Forget International Design Capital of the world, what’s really impressive is that it’s just been confirmed as a global city to be featured on a new Monopoly game as voted for by fans worldwide.

Back in February, Hasbro (the company behind the popular board game), called for fans to vote for cities from various countries around the world to be featured on the new Monopoly: Here & Now game.

19th March also happens to be Monopoly’s 80th birthday, and the voting results announcement was scheduled for today to celebrate the milestone.

Caroline Hillary, CEO of Red Flag, the marketing firm behind the Cape Town campaign, posted an update this morning via Facebook.

While an official announcement hasn’t been made yet, we’ve confirmed the news and Australia’s News.com managed to get its hands on the full list of all the cities that made the cut. Here they are:

  • Lima, Peru
  • Hong Kong, China
  • Riga, Latvia
  • Lisbon, Portugal
  • Istanbul, Turkey
  • Warsaw, Poland
  • Mexico City, Mexico
  • Santiago, Chile
  • Belfast, Ireland
  • Athens, Greece
  • Belgrade, Serbia
  • London, England
  • Moscow, Russia
  • Tokyo, Japan
  • New York, USA
  • Amsterdam, Netherlands
  • Sydney, Australia
  • Queenstown, New Zealand
  • Cape Town, South Africa
  • Taipei, Taiwan
  • Giethoorn, Netherlands and Madrid, Spain (the Wildcard winners)

In Monopoly: Here & Now, players travel around the board to visit as many locations as possible, collecting passport stamps along the way. They then collect cash from visitor fees when opponents land on their locations and the first to fill their passport, wins.
