Facebook Messenger gets apps, here are our favourites

Unless you’ve been living in a social media black hole for the past couple of years, you’ll be familiar with Messenger, Facebook’s standalone chat app. And of course, the brouhaha that emerged when the company decided to separate it out from the site and its core mobile applications in August last year.

Unlike WeChat and WhatsApp that do all kinds of cool things (aside from instant messaging and emoji), Facebook’s Messenger has been a comparably run-of-the-mill chat app. That’s until yesterday, when the company added an option to enhance chats with its own set of apps (via Entrepreneur).

Yes, you read right.

Your chat app now has its own apps, and they add all kinds of flavour to your chats, from short videos you’ve created yourself with your phone’s camera (Keek) to the ability to add your friends’ heads onto dancing people (JibJab) to the option to send any of the millions of GIFs generated by the internet at large (Giphy).

There’s one for every occasion!

You can even put a collage together featuring your own photos (via Pic Stitch) and share them with select chat partners, as opposed to the entire world via Facebook or Pinterest or whatever photo-sharing site you usually use.

To see Messenger’s list of apps, the next time you’re using it to chat to friends press theMessenger Elipses Buttonbutton and drag the screen that appears up. Simply press Install on the one(s) you want and then set about using them to choon your mates. Provided they also use Messenger, that is.

So basically, Facebook has put the power of meme-generation and sharing right in your hands, in a single app, for your personal use in chats with friends while also creating its very own platform that can be used to launch other apps.

Messenger is available for both iOS and Android.
