Sony starts updating Xperia Z3 to Android 5.0 Lollipop (again)

When Dave reviewed the Sony Xperia Z3 last year, he made the bold claim that it was the best Android phone ever. Since then, however, there’s been a slight bone of contention which has seen it fall slightly out of favour in the office. Despite the fact that Android Lollipop, with its lovely “Material Design” interface and sophisticated notifications system has been available for several of the Z3’s rivals for some time now, Sony has been somewhat slow on the upgrades front.

The office Z3 is still trundling along on Android 4.4.2 which, to be honest, is starting to feel a wee bit dated now. I’m not usually one to be superficial about operating systems, but the flat, black notification and multitasking screen of the Z3 could have been hewn out of the 1980s guide to UI style compared to the fresh and colourful look of the HTC One (M8) sat next to it.

Worse, Sony began updating the Z3 two weeks ago, but seems to have fallen short of delivering the software anywhere outside of Scandinavia. It announced in a blogpost on 16th March that the update was available, but not even big markets like the US caught a glimpse of it.

So hurrah, then, that the firm says it’s begun its upgrade program once again today, and looking at the XDA forums owners around the world are waking up to find their phones upgrading to Lollipop. There’s no sign of it in South Africa yet, though, so fingers crossed we’re next on the list.
