[MAP MONDAY] This is why Microsoft is killing Internet Explorer

Last week Microsoft announced that it would be killing off its Internet Explorer web browser, possibly in favour for a different, better browser rolling out with Windows 10.

But according to a map published by Wikimedia user Gogensi, it seems rather apparent just why the tech giant is discontinuing it browser: The map below highlights the number of hits as measured by StatCounter in July 2014, and shows which browser is responsible for the largest share of traffic by country.

Internet Explorer seems to be predominantly used in Japan and South Korea.

The map shows which browser is responsible for the largest share of traffic by country.

While it makes for some interesting reading, we are not totally convinced at the map’s accuracy.

In October last year, we covered the research from an analysis company called Net Market Share (NMS). According to NMS, Chrome users account for only 21.19% on desktop computers.

In contrast to the map above, almost 60% of internet users asked IE to do their searching and browsing.
