Eskom tariff hike looms as loadshedding continues

As colder (and wet) weather starts to slowly creep in around South Africa, things are not looking so good for electricity users in the country.

Loadshedding is back, and we can now also expect another possible rise in the electricity price.

Eskom spokesperson Khulu Phasiwa told Jacaranda FM that Eskom is looking to increase the price average citizens pay for electricity due to the temporary increase in the electricity levy, as announced by finance minister Nhlanhla Nene in February.

“We might have to increase our tariffs so that we can incorporate the issues around the levies, but at this stage, it is too early to say. We will be applying obviously for the next tariff increase for the 2016/2017 financial year.

The minister announced that the electricity levy would rise from 3,5c/kWh to 5,5c, while the additional 2c/kWh will be withdrawn when the electricity shortage is over.

“Secondly, an increase is proposed in the energy-efficiency savings incentive from 45c/kWh to 95c/kWh, together with its extension to cogeneration projects,” he said.

On Wednesday morning Eskom once again confirmed that there is a strong possibility of loadshedding, even though it implemented Stage 1 for four hours yesterday.
