Uber South Africa wants to make riders safer with new software

Taxi-hailing service Uber has been getting some flack across the world about the safety of its riders, so with that in mind the company has rolled out a new feature in South Africa.

“In an effort to uphold our gold standard of safety and reliability, we have made some changes to the rider and driver connection process,” Uber said in an email statement.

The company says that it will be using the Twilio service, which hides the rider and cab driver’s reall mobile phone number during the hailing and driving process.

It explained that the driver of the cab will always see the same number for all the riders it picks up. It said that the Twilio service will re-route all calls through Uber’s systems, which then connects the driver and rider, should they need to call each other.

“This way, both riders and drivers will be unable to store personal cell phone numbers. You’ll only be contactable by your driver between the time you request your trip, and shortly after the trip ends using the Twilio number,” it said.

Uber added that riders will also no longer be able to SMS the driver, and that shortly after a trip is complete, the driver will no longer be able to call you.
