BBC’s Cape Town hackathon to explore new ways of using audio content

Cape Town techies keen on finding novel ways of using audio in order to connect with larger audiences are invited to take part in a Development Studio event in the Mother City next week.

Taking place on the on the 23rd and 24th of April at 66 Tarentaal Road, Bridgetown, this upcoming event is organised by BBC Connected Studio, BBC News Labs & BBC World Service in partnership with RLabs.

The organisers are looking for teams of developers, designers and those with UX skills to consider cost effective ways of using existing technologies like Internet Protocol (IP) Raspberry Pi, audio streaming, software defined radio and podcasts. The aim of the event is to develop tools that can deliver BBC content to communities across sub-Saharan Africa, all while reaching younger audiences.

“We are trying to learn more about the ways people across the world consume digital content on their mobile phones. Reaching out to the local tech scene in Cape Town is a great way to collaborate because it provides us with valuable intelligence from within a market we are trying to grow in,” explains BBC World Service Group’s Dmitry Shishkin.

In order to be selected to take part in the event, you’ll need to send two recent examples of your work (that are relevant to this brief) to connectedstudio@bbc.co.uk. Successful ideas will be announced in May for pilots funded by the BBC.

More information about the Development Studio event can be found on the Connected Studio website.
