Sony’s Xperia Z4 revealed in Japan

Sony’s next flagship smartphone, the Xperia Z4, is officially a thing.

This news comes courtesy of an official Sony Mobile announcement in Japan today that detailed the phone’s existence and specifications.

From what we’ve seen, the Z4 appears to be an incremental step up from the Z3 with similar looks but a faster processor, a tweaked camera setup and a slightly slimmer profile, running Android Lollipop (5.0).

According to the announcement, the Z4 will use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 chipset with its octa-core processor, 3GB of system RAM and a 2930mAh battery, packed into a chassis that’s 6.9mm thick (0.4mm thinner than the Z3) and 8g lighter than the Z3’s 152g.

Naturally, like other Xperia phones the Z4 is also water and dustproof and doesn’t require that its ports be covered.

The display is the same size as that of the Z3 at 5.2 inches, and although the press release didn’t explicitly say so, it will likely be protected by Gorilla Glass as other Z phones were.

The screen runs at a resolution of 1 920×1 080, so pixel density won’t be anything particularly impressive but expect not to see any pixels nonetheless.

And since taking photos of food is something a lot of people do, Sony has given the 20.7MP front-facing camera a “Cooking Mode” that apparently takes good snaps of food, even in low light. (I must admit to /facepalming somewhat at this particular snippet, but who am I to judge what people do with their phones.)

The 5.1MP rear-facing camera is now wide-angle-capable with a focal length of 25mm, presumably enabling wider-angle selfies.

Other tweaks include support for high-definition audio playback (even wirelessly) that the release says is better than that of CD audio technology.

There is no international announcement as yet, but we expect one to hit the web really soon now that the cat is officially out of the bag in Japan.

Whether or not this will be enough to turn Sony’s smartphone fortunes around in the long-term is hard to say; the Z3 was/is a brilliant phone yet it didn’t sell particularly well (via Android Authority).

It’s hard to say whether the improvements made the to Z4 will be enough to attract people back to the company’s Xperia phones, although should the company decide to charge significantly less for this model than other flagship phones they could have a winner on their hands.
