You will soon be able to make WhatsApp calls using data on iPhones, according to TechCrunch, who reported that the WhatsApp update that will make it possible is in the process of rolling out to iOS.

Android users got the functionality a few weeks back, and WhatsApp promised it would be coming to iOS “in the coming weeks”. After just three weeks, that promise is being fulfilled.

TechCrunch said the update won’t get to everyone at the same time as it’s rolling out in stages, so if your WhatsApp hasn’t yet been updated, just wait a bit longer.

As of this week, there are over 800 million people already using WhatsApp worldwide, and since text messages sent using the service don’t make use of the SMS facilities of cellular networks, TechCrunch says SMS-related revenues are dropping significantly for cellular networks everywhere.

With voice calling being added to the list of functions in WhatsApp and other chat apps, the money-spinners of years gone by – voice and SMS – are no longer as lucrative per user as they were in the past for cellular service providers.

It’s good news for consumers, however, who have the option to make use of free WiFi hotspots to make and receive calls using data without adding significantly to their cell phone bills.

Should your phone not yet have the update, you can always try Google Hangouts, Facebook Messenger and even Telegram in the meantime for voice communications that don’t use the traditional calling functionality of cellular networks.

Deon got his first taste of PC gaming at the tender age of 11 when his father bought an 8088 XT, ostensibly to "help him with his homework". Instead, it introduced him to Leisure Suit Larry, King Graham, Sonny Bonds and many more, and Deon has been a PC gamer and hardware enthusiast ever since. He landed his first professional writing gig in 2006 at a prestigious local PC magazine, a very happy happenstance as he got to write for a living about things he loves - tech, PCs, gaming, and everything in between. He's been writing about it all ever since, and loves every minute of it.
