SABC’s Hlaudi Motsoeneng will be suspended

Considered a small victory for the Democratic Alliance (DA), the SABC’s COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng has an order to be suspended by the Western Cape High Court.

In December last year, the DA applied to the courts to have Motsoeneng suspended pending a disciplinary inquiry regarding his rather controversial appointment as head of the embattled SABC, and the fact that he seemingly gave himself a hefty salary increase.

After the facts came to light, the Public Protector’s recommendations also stated that Motsoeneng should be suspended.

“The Public Protector found that Mr Motsoeneng had lied about having a matric certificate, “purged” staff members perceived as disloyal to him and fraudulently inflated salaries (including his own – from R1.5m to R2.4m in one year),” the DA explained in a media release.

Chairperson of the DA’s federal executives James Selfe said today’s court ruling is only the first step in a long process, and that it ultimately wants to see Motsoeneng’s appointment annulled.

“Today’s judgement was the first part of the DA’s application in this matter. The second part is the DA’s review application to have Mr Motsoeneng’s appointment declared invalid on the grounds that it was manifestly irrational and unlawful from the very outset.”

But this is not the first time that Motsoeneng has been hauled over the coals.

In October last year Western Cape High Court also ordered the SABC to suspend its chief operating officer, and undertake disciplinary proceedings against him.

No action was taken as a result of the Public Protector’s findings, and instead Motsoeneng was appointed to the permanent position of COO, a post he had merely been acting in previously.
