Minecraft, now with more girls

Minecraft will soon let people play as a female avatar thanks to a patch that adds “Alex” to the PlayStation and Xbox versions of the game.

Without the patch it’s not possible to play as a female character, whereas it’s totally doable in the PC version by way of a skin download, a cosmetic change that updates the outer appearance of Steve, the game’s decidedly male mascot, to make him appear female.

While a skin is certainly one way to add more girls to the game, it’s a little strange that such a popular game didn’t include the option from the get-go.

But that issue will soon be been addressed, and girls the world over will be able to start a new game of Minecraft and choose Alex, which Engadget describes as “a character they can identify with”, right off the bat.

The update rolls out for the Xbox and PlayStation versions of the game tomorrow, the 29th of April, whereas players on smartphones and tablets can only expect to see her “later this summer”, so between June and the end of August.

What do you think? Is it about time that Minecraft on consoles and mobile added playable female characters, or is this much ado about nothing?

Me, I’m all about people having options in all facets of their lives, even in their videogames, and am glad to see the studio behind the game respond to player input in this way.
