Last night the statue of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi – the preeminent leader of the Indian independence movement in British-ruled India – at Gandhi Square in Johannesburg CBD, was vandalised with white paint.
This is the latest in a spate of statues that have been defaced around the country, following protests and the removal of the Cecil John Rhodes statue at the University of Cape Town.
We’ve drawn up a map with the locations and links to stories on every statue that has been defaced so far in the last month or thereabout.
