Mortal Kombat X R60 DLC offers “easy fatalities”

Mortal Kombat X is out today, along with a DLC pack that makes pulling off fatalities a lot easier. Yes, really.

For R60, you won’t have to memorise a long sequence of button-presses in order to tear your opponents’ heads off and can instead do it with a much shorter key-press sequence. It’s on the Xbox Live marketplace right now, offering “easy fatalities” with “simplified inputs”.

I’m not sure why this is even a thing, personally. I have been under the impression that difficult games are what gamers want of late, given the popularity of the Souls games and their latest incarnation, Bloodborne.

Seems to me giving gamers an easy way out for a bit of money down is nothing short of a cynical cash-in by developers keen on milking more money out of gamers who can’t game. Sure, it could appeal to a casual gamer not looking for the challenge and who just wants to see the gory fatalities, but it feels cheap.

That’s because it undermines the value of actually pulling a fatality off in a human-on-human match – a serious challenge since it’s such a long sequence of button-presses – because your opponent won’t know if you did it yourself, or if you’ve paid money for a shortcut.

Admittedly, nobody is forcing you to buy it, but that’s not the point – the point is it’s out there, and people are going to use it because in my experience humans like few things more than a shortcut to apparent greatness.

I say “apparent” because it won’t be great, not truly, but I’m pretty sure at least some people won’t mind because appearances count for more than they should.

Fault lies on both sides here; with the developers for making the DLC in the first place (cynical bastards, cashing in on crappy gamers), and gamers who actually buy it, sending the clear signal that this sort of thing is okay.

What’s to stop the next developer deliberately designing flaws into their game and then offering R60 DLC to “fix” the problem? No, this feels like a rather slippery slope to me, and one I hope gaming doesn’t go down.

Not now, not ever.

What do you guys think? Is this a moot point because nobody is forcing you to buy the DLC, or should it never have been made in the first place. I’d love to hear what you think.
