Publisher CD Projeckt Red is reportedly a little unhappy with digital retailer Green Man Gaming for offering pre-orders of the PC version of The Witcher 3 for $38.99 (R472).
That’s partly because such a low price is highly unusual for a game that’s not even out yet – nevermind one that’s as hotly-anticipated as The Witcher 3 – but mostly because CD Projeckt Red and GMG didn’t actually reach an official agreement as to the sale of the game on GMG’s site.
Green Man Gaming’s CEO Paul Sulyok explained to Gamespot that “…[GMG] tried to work with CD Projekt Red, but the developer chose to focus on its own platform, GOG.com, rather than give players more options for where they can buy the game.”
This resulted in a spat between the two companies, with CD Projeckt Red going so far as to ask its customers via its official forums not to support Green Man Gaming, saying that they can’t be sure where the site is getting the codes it is selling from.
GMG says it struck a deal with another distributor which had secured a deal with CD Projeckt Red to distribute the game, meaning the codes being sold are entirely legitimate and GMG is therefore not robbing the publisher of any revenue.
For us South African PC gamers, this is all a bit of a storm in a teacup because thanks to the current exchange rate, $38.99 isn’t much less than what we’re being asked to pay for the game from an actual etailer.
That price translates to R471, whereas it’s possible to grab a physical copy of the game, complete with free delivery and – perhaps more importantly – no big download, for R499 from Takealot.
The Witcher 3 is out on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on the 19th of May.
