DA files court bid against SABC over “censorship”

The Democratic Alliance (DA) will be having its sixth national elective congress, officially known as the Federal Congress, this weekend. But South Africans won’t be able to witness it if the SABC has its way.

According to the DA, the national broadcaster has withdrawn live coverage of the event after initially stating that it would be broadcast from the Nelson Mandela Bay in the Eastern Cape this Saturday and Sunday, forcing the opposition party to file papers in the against the SABC.

“It is manifestly in the public interest that a national elective congress of the official opposition in South Africa, representing over four million voters, receives coverage by the national public broadcaster,” the DA said in a press release.

The DA said the withdrawal “is both contrary to the public interest and contrary to the SABC’s own editorial policy,” and that “the national public broadcaster must act with political impartiality and must not display bias in its live coverage decisions.”

The party has subtley pointed at censorship by the ANC as being the reason behind the withdrawal in an image it posted on it’s Twitter feed.

The DA said its Federal Congress focuses on the theme of building one nation with one future underpinned by freedom, fairness and opportunity for all.

The SABC is yet to respond the court bid.
