2.2m people have bought GTA V PC

Clearly there has been a lot of anticipation among PC gamers for Rockstar’s latest crime opus: SteamSpy’s stats say there are over 2.2 million owners of Grand Theft Auto V on Valve’s gaming service according to some poking around I did on the site earlier today.

GTA V is the fourth-most popular game on the service, with 1.9 million of its 2.2 million owners actively having played it in the last two weeks. It ranks behind DOTA 2, Counterstrike: Global Ops and Team Fortress 2 in popularity, an astonishing feat considering its price of $60 versus the respective Free, Free and $14.99 price-tags of those other games.

While SteamSpy makes it clear on its About page that their data isn’t guaranteed to be 100% accurate, it still provides a good indication as to a game’s Steam popularity.

From my side I’m mostly interested in ownership figures, as the gaming industry as a whole seldom talks PC game sales figures without some sort of subscription to professional stats-gathering services like GFK, and it’s nice to get an indication of GTA V’s popularity.

Old-timers Skyrim (2011) and Civilization V (2010) are both still in the top 10 Steam games, with 1.2m and 727k players each over the past two weeks. Civ V enjoys a longer average playtime at just over 14 hours, with Skyrim players immersing themselves in the world of mods for just under ten and a half hours each.

If you’d like to see more stats on Steam games, SteamSpy has a lot of info to share. Find it here.
