Expect evening loadshedding for the rest of the week

Eskom has begun to publish a twice-weekly system status bulletin about the status of the power grid and expected downtimes, and the first one – which was released yesterday – isn’t good news. It revealed that South Africans across the country can expect to be sitting in the dark for the rest of the week.

The power producer’s sudden activation of loadshedding last night took many users by surprise, as it at first thanked citizen’s for using electricity sparingly, and a couple of hours later implemented Stage 1 without warning.

Taking a look ahead, the system status bulletin predicts that demand will overshadow capacity:

  • Tuesday 12 May: The capacity available is predicted to be 29 563 MW (including open cycle gas turbines) while demand is forecast 32 521 MW.
  • Wednesday 13 May: The capacity available is predicted to be 29 753 MW (including open cycle gas turbines) while demand is forecast 32 329 MW.
  • Thursday 14 May: The capacity available is predicted to bes 29 753 MW (including open cycle gas turbines) while demand is forecast 32 456 MW.
  • Friday 15 May: The capacity available is predicted to be 30 678 MW (including open cycle gas turbines) while demand is forecast 31 362 MW.
  • Saturday 16 May: The capacity available is predicted to be 30 588 MW (including open cycle gas turbines) while demand is forecast 30 613 MW.
  • Sunday 17 May: The capacity available is predicted to be 30 588 MW (including open cycle gas turbines) while demand is forecast 30 419 MW.
