Next Assassin’s Creed to star twins, has no multiplayer

Ah, Ubisoft, back to its old tricks of making me excited for a new Assassin’s Creed with slick videos and a killer soundtrack.

Yesterday, the company took the wraps off Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate and showed off more of what we already know – that the game will be set in Industrial Revolution-era London – and more of what we didn’t.

Like the fact that Syndicate will have not one, but two protagonists: a set of twins, Jacob and Evie Frye, raised on the Creed. Jacob is the more typical assassin, full of beans and eager to fight and kill and throw himself off of buildings into haystacks, while Evie is the subtler of the two, a master of stealth and subversion.

There will also be vehicles to commandeer – a first for the series – like carriages and trains, as well as the almost obligatory rope-launcher-grappler thing seen in other games (Batman, Dying Light, Ubisoft’s own Far Cry 4).

The theme of the game is that of waking up the working class to the fact that the rise of the modern era happened at the cost of their blood, sweat and tears, and pitting them against the upper classes as they attempt to “take back the city”, which is piloted by our Assassin twins who go around forming gangs and spreading their influence.

“The ability to lead an underground gang, commandeer any vehicle on hand and use modern tools to take on an expansive and fast-paced Victorian London sets this game apart,” said Marc-Alexis Côté, creative director, Ubisoft. “Assassin’s Creed Syndicate has been in development for more than two years and this new modern take on the living open world will please Assassin’s Creed fans and newcomers alike.”

This game, unlike Unity, won’t have a multiplayer component. Gamespot writes “According to creative director Marc-Alexis Cote, developers wanted to bring the stealth-action series back to its roots and focus on the core single-player experience. Assassin’s Creed Syndicate is narrative-driven and features a handful of new elements as well as major tweaks to combat and stealth; Ubisoft Quebec chose to hone and polish these aspects over adding in any sort of co-op or online play.

Here’s the official debut trailer that Ubisoft put out last night:

While all of this makes me cautiously optimistic about the game, Unity and its buggy launch state won’t be far from the hearts, minds and wallets of franchise fans, so Ubisoft has its work cut out for it when it comes to making amends. Fortunately the also means they will likely have learned from Unity’s mistakes, and should be working hard to avoid them.

Assassins Creed: Syndicate will apparently be out on the 23rd of October this year on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, with a PC release happening shortly after.
