Six high school learners from Cape Town and Grahamstown who were chosen as the cream of the crop at the South African National Maths Olympiad will represent the country in the competition’s international finals, the South African Maths Foundation (SAMF) has announced.

The learners, all in grade 11, competed against hundreds of other high schoolers in last year’s national leg. These are the learners that made it through to the international finals.

  • Nicholas Kroon – St Andrew’s College in Grahamstown
  • Andrew McGregor – Rondebosch Boys High School in Cape Town
  • Mohammed Yaseen Mowzer – Fairbairn College in Cape Town
  • Sanjiv Ranchod – Westerford High School in Cape Town
  • Bronson Rudner – South African College High School in Cape Town
  • David Broodryk – Westerford High School in Cape Town

“Competing with young minds from all over the world is a wonderful experience and we wish the South African team the best of luck,” said Professor Johann Engelbrecht, Executive Director of the SAMF.

Learners from 100 countries will be participating in the 56th International Maths Olympiad to be held in Thailand from the 4th to 16th July. Questions testing advanced thinking skills are chosen for the Maths Olympiad from mathematical topics including Geometry, Combinatorics, Number Theory and Algebra.

Last year, South Africa placed 64th, dropping five places from 58th place in 2013. China won first position, earning them a gold medal, while the US and Taiwan came in second and third place respectively.
