City of Tshwane crime-fighting app to be deployed across the police force

The City of Tshwane’s Namola crimefighting system and app, which was piloted last year, will be deployed across the entire city, and smartphones compatible with the app will be installed in all Tshwane Metro Police Department vehicles, the city’s executive mayor, Kgosientso Ramokgopa has said.

Ramokgopa highlighted this during the State of the Capital Address presented today at Freedom Park, Pretoria, adding that 2 000 officers will be trained on how to use the emergency response system.

Namola lets users send an emergency alert to the nearest Tshwane Metro Police station at a touch of a panic button, should they be attacked or feel that they are in danger.

Police officers nearest to the area where the person is located receive the alert on a dashboard-mounted smartphones in their vehicles and they can then respond to the alert and make their way to the scene.

“We have a zero tolerance approach to any form of misconduct”, Ramokgopa said.

Ramokgopa also mentioned in his speech that the city’s e-Tshwane utility accounts site currently has 120 000 registered accounts on it.

e-Tshwane lets home owners, companies, property managing agents and tenants to register and view, download and make payments for their utility accounts online. Residents can make payments via the Standard Bank MyBills and Nedbank MyeBills internet banking services.

“The system electronically controls all referencing ensuring that your payment is correctly allocated. No manual input or human errors in capturing references,” the e-Tshwane site says.

“e-Tshwane has enabled availability of certain services on a 24/7 basis. This is a bold step towards the national realisation of e-government services,” Ramokgopa said about the site’s growth.
