Saxonwold and Parkwood plan for community fibre now too

A year ago the situation for fibre to the home (FTTH) broadband in South Africa looked bleak. Only the super-rich had it, and no-one was even really talking about it until residents of Parkhurst, in Johannesburg, put out a tender off their backs to get a private supplier to come and dig up the roads.

Since then, Joburg suburbs have been falling over themselves to follow suite. The latest to have signed up for fibre provider Vumatel’s services are Saxonwold and Parkwood: the Saxonwold and Parkwood Residents Association (SAPRA) has just confirmed that the company is its preferred supplier of FTTH in the area.

“SAPRA concluded the review and negotiations on the Fibre Optic Project with the resultant endorsement of Vumatel as the preferred supplier. There has been much acclaim by the residents of the Parkhurst area and with the benefits that fibre affords residents, we look forward to becoming a fully-fledged ‘Vuma fibrehood’ in the coming months,” says SAPRA Committee Member Bill Haslam.

Construction and installation is planned to start later this year, and the first residents should be connected to super-fast internet by September.

Currently, there are five other suburbs serviced by Vumatel: Parkhurst, Greenside, Parktown North, Killarney and Riviera.

“The world is becoming ever more connected from a digital perspective. We speak of the internet of things, always on connectivity, video on demand and music streaming to name a few. A stable high-speed broadband connection has become a sought after consideration for thousands, if not hundreds of thousands South Africans,” says CEO of Vumatel Neil Schoeman, in a statement.
