Windows 10 coming in at least seven flavours: here’s what they are

When Windows 10 comes out Microsoft will unleash at least seven different versions of the operating system on the public.

The company announced the different versions yesterday via the official Windows blog. They are:

  • Windows 10 Home
  • Windows 10 Professional
  • Windows 10 Enterprise
  • Windows 10 Mobile
  • Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise
  • Windows 10 Education
  • Windows 10 IoT Core (for Raspberry Pi and the like)

That’s a lot of Windows. We had hoped Microsoft would have reduced the number of different versions of its latest OS compared to years past, but alas, that’s not the case.

Fortunately the average Windows user only need concern themselves with the first two.

For most people who just have a PC at home that they want to use to play games, surf the internet, email family and troll people on Facebook, Windows 10 Home is fine; it just doesn’t have business features like the ability to join a domain, which home PCs just don’t need.

Pro is for people who work at small to medium-sized businesses as it supports things like remote working scenarios, using tablets and PCs in the workplace andas well as advanced management software. It’s also the version to go for if you consider yourself a “power user”.

Enterprise is for people who work at big companies with huge corporate networks that require stringent security, deployment and networking features needed to keep the IT department happy.

As for the others, Windows 10 Mobile is the name Microsoft has given to the version of Windows 10 that runs on phones and some tablets, Education is intended for use at educational institutes, Mobile Enterprise has features that allow Windows phones to work seamlessly inside big corporate environments, and IoT is a cut-down version of Windows 10 designed for small devices like gateways.

Don’t you feel so much better knowing all that?

While we don’t yet know an exact release date for Windows 10, the smart money is on “sometime in June 2015”, and Microsoft’s offer of upgrading to the new OS from “qualifying Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 devices” for free still stands, and will continue to stand for the first year of Windows 10’s availability.
