R157m budget to give 7 000 Tshwane homes access to electricity

The City of Tshwane municipality has set aside R157 million from its 2015/16 budget to make sure that 7 000 homes that currently don’t have electricity are connected, the city’s executive mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa has said.

Ramokgopa made the announcement during his City of Tshwane budget speech this morning at the Sammy Marks Council Chambers.

This is part of the city’s Electricity-for-All programme which aims to provide all residents in formal and informal settlements with electricity.

According to Statistics South Africa’s Census, 88.6% of Tshwane’s residents had electricity in 2011.

To improve electricity supply, substations in Bronkhorstspruit, Mamelodi, Kentron and Eldoraigne will be upgraded, while new ones in Soshanguve Block JJ, Monavoni and Hatherley will be constructed. R100 million will be used to carry out these projects, the mayor said.

The city’s e-Tshwane utility accounts service, which lets residents pay for and view their bills online, will receive an amount of R15 million to get more residents sign up to the service and move from using paper and traditional methods of payment.
