[MAP MONDAY] When each African country gained independence from colonial rule

Today, the 25th May is Africa Day, a day set aside to celebrate the founding of the African Union (formerly known as the Organisation of African Unity) in 1963.

The day was also originally highlighted to celebrate independence in a number of African countries after World War Two, between 1945 and 1960.

This year’s Africa Day theme is “We are Africa – Opening the doors of learning and culture from Cape to Cairo”.

South Africa got its own independence from British rule in 1961. The map below by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees depicts the colonial rulership under which each African country fell and the year it became independent.
