When thinking of the largest photograph in the world, you could be forgiven for thinking about it in a physical manner; that is, the size of a printed image. But a photographer recently set the world record for the largest photo ever taken in terms of pixel density.

How big is it? Well, the photo of Mont Blanc (the highest mountain in the Alps) comes in at a massive 365 gigapixels, and was taken by Filippo Blengini with the help of an international team and a number of sponsors. It is about 45 gigapixels bigger than the previous record.

It is the biggest picture taken on earth, as Nasa actually holds the record for the largest picture taken anywhere. In 2014 Nasa released a 681 gigapixel image of the Moon’s surface from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter.

The image of Mont Blanc was captured with a Canon EOS 70D, a 400mm lens and a Claus fully automated high precision pan-and-tilt head.

“We were brave, crazy and ambitious enough to think about a gigapanoramic picture, to seize every single detail of the mountain,” Blengini explains on the website.

“The astonishing majesty of this impressive white giant is too wide to be represented either in words or images. You have to be there to feel it. But now, you can grab that rarefied atmosphere through the highest resolution panorama ever made.”
