Blackberry outsells Samsung and Apple phones at Phonefinder

South Africans really love BlackBerry, to the point where the company’s phones out-sell handsets from big names like Samsung and Apple even now, in 2015.

This is according to a Fin24 article on Phonefinder, a website that lets South Africans find and compare cellular phone contracts. Phonefinder collates data gathered from its 100 000 monthly visitors who all arrive on the site looking for new deals – although its data obviously doesn’t reflect the vast majority of smartphone sales which are directly from vendors.

As of right now, the top-selling phone on the site is BlackBerry’s Z3, which beats Samsung’s Galaxy S5 and Apple’s 16GB iPhone 6 to the top spot.

Surprisingly, the older BlackBerry 9720, a BB7.1 phone that doesn’t make use of the company’s latest – and far superior – operating system BB10, occupies fourth place ahead of Apple’s iPhone 5.

The reason behind BlackBerry’s continuing popularity in South Africa comes down to price, Phonefinder’s data suggests, as the Z3 is available on most cellular networks for around R200 a month, and the 9720 can be had for as little as R139pm from Cell C.

Between Apple and Samsung only, the two companies appear to trade places on a regular basis, both vacillating between first and second spot as each company releases a new flagship phone.

“Just before Samsung first launched their new flagship phone onto the market in South Africa, Phonefinder’s most popular phone between Samsung and Apple was the iPhone 6. However, as soon as Samsung’s new phone was launched, Phonefinder instantly saw a shift in consumer behaviour,” Phonefinder’s CEO Lance Krom told Fin24.

So despite not doing so well internationally, BlackBerry continues to enjoy strong support from South Africans as far as Phonefinder’s data goes.
