Random Hacks of Kindness returns to Pretoria next weekend

We believe technology is a force for good here at htxt.africa, even if all the evidence is usually to the contrary. Which is why it’s awesome to see the twice yearly Random Hacks of Kindness return to South Africa every six months.

There is some good in all of us and ‘RHOKstars’ will be spreading goodness next weekend and you can come along! Make sure that you sign up in time to (apparently all the tickets are already gone) join benevolent hackers, geeks, code evangelists entrepreneurs and designers as they hack for social good.

The School of Computing at Unisa will assemble members of the hacker community at its Muckleneuk Campus next week Saturday and Sunday and present to them socio-economic challenges ranging from health care provision, lack of access to quality education, increase in criminal activities, inadequate transport facilities and many others. Participants will be tasked with finding apps and other software solutions to the challenges within 24 hours.

High-tech activist Tiyani Nghonyama of Geekulcha is helping to organise this year’s event. He says social innovators are invited to send socially relevant ideas so that they can be hacked on.

“This time, participants can expect challenges from the Pretoria Street Photography project, Augmented Reality apps, app for the City of Tshwane and other exciting projects,” he says.

Nghonyama also explains that the City of Tshwane will be a partner for the first time at this year’s event. Winners at RHOK will get to speak at the Tech4Africa conference happening later this year. Student hackers will also receive a one-year South African Innovators Network (SAINE) student membership.
