Cell C scores tops, MTN the lowest in value for money contracts

Do you think that you are getting the best value for money when it comes to services and features offered as part of your mobile phone contract?

If you are on Cell C, a recent survey by Research ICT Africa suggests that you might just be. The research firm set out to find the mobile contracts with the best value for money and arranged them according to their Postpaid Value Index (PVI).

Divided up into separate price categories, Cell C managed to come out tops in eight of the categories, with Vodacom scoring the most in four categories, and Telkom Mobile being the best in one category.

“The PVI measures the value a customer gets for the monthly subscription price in terms of bundled minutes, SMSs and data. Where there is more than one product per category, the one with the highest PVI is selected. The average PVI is based on all contract offerings of the given operator,” Research ICT Africa explained in the research paper.

Out of all the contracts, Cell C’s Infinity Select offering in the R901 – R1 000 category had the highest PVI out of all the contracts in the survey, making it the best value for money operator in the country.

While Telkom Mobile only managed to be tops in one category, it still had the second highest PVI with an average score of 6.48, and its Unlimited product scored 15.04 on the index.

Vodacom proved to be the better option in the R600-R700 category.

“Vodacom’s best PVI product is Smart Red VIP, which boasts a PVI of 7.59 for a monthly subscription of R1 999,” the company said.

If you were wondering where MTN ranks in all of this, there is some bad news. The survey found that MTN contracts have the lowest PVI among the four mobile networks while also having the highest number of contracts available – 46 in all.

“It seems that MTN could benefit from an overhaul of its postpaid offerings, following Vodacom and Cell C. It would be important for MTN to simplify its offering while providing more value to its customers through bundling more minutes, SMSs and data,” the survey noted.

In a strange twist, the survey found that Cell C’s offering to buy out contract customers from other networks won’t actually give them a better deal when they sign up to the Epic package.

When comparing the value for money between Cell C’s Epic packages and the others in the survey, you will notice that the PVI scores are far lower than the rest.

“The low PVIs of the Epic product range show that switching customers may actually not get a much better product.”
