Rdio launches two new streaming options in South Africa

Online music streaming service Rdio launched in South Africa in 2013 as part of a 20-country expansion, and today it announced two new products that will be made available to music aficionados.

First up is a “free” ad-supported streaming Internet radio service. The plan allows for users to listen to programmed Internet radio stations at no cost and no subscription is needed. It is similar to rival Pandora Internet Radio’s streaming model, where users select a genre or specific band, and Rdio will play a selection of tunes that match the request.

“South African users now have access to unlimited algorithmic artist- and genre-based stations, human-curated stations programmed to fit any mood or activity, personalised stations tuned to each individual listener and stations based on tastemakers,” Rdio said in a statement.

If you don’t want to go that route, there is still the option to listen to whatever tracks you want to for free, but you have to sign up for a free account that is only valid for six months – and your email address can only be used once.

For a bit more freedom there is Rdio Select, a R25 monthly subscription service. It is specifically aimed towards mobile (iOS and Android) users and features unlimited access to ad-free streaming radio.

You will also be allowed to download up to 25 songs a day, which you can keep forever. However, there is a bit of a catch. While you can download 25 songs a day, you can only keep 25 songs at any given time.

“This is an enhanced way to enjoy music inspired by specific artists, albums or songs as well as stations carefully curated personally by artists, labels and our programming team,” it explained.

Other subscription offers from Rdio in South Africa include Rdio Unlimited (R60 a month), a web streaming subscription of R25, and a family package for R108. If you don’t feel like paying every month, it is available for R300 a year.

If you want to give it a twirl, Rdio Select is being made available for a 60-day free trial – for a limited time. Click here for access.
